In my opinion, embodied compersion is biological in that most people experience it in a familial way such as a parent having joy in their childs success. Same for sibs and parents.
To your point, I think attitudinal is compersion by choice such as a stag man would have when his wife goes on a date. It is counter to societal expectations and I think in most cases a person's instinct. It takes a lot of self realization to allow someone else's joy to wash over one's own pangs of jealousy and concern of losing them to another.
